Working with chemotherapeutic agents

CCoPE
Date: 2001-03-09

Question:
I am a genetic counsellor in Halifax. I will be seeing a patient who worked as a nurse providing chemotherapy treatments for 2 1/2 years about 10 years ago. She is currently pregnant and wondering if this can have any bearing on the health of her child. Do you have any suggestions as to where I may be able to find information about this or do you have an answer to her question? Thank you

Answer:
We believe your patient is not at higher risk than women who were not exposed to chemotherapeutic agents. This is based on the fact that even children of women who conceived a few months after the completion of chemotherapy for malignant diseases are not at risk for teratogenic or any other chemotherapy-related complications.
