Blue B sodium dye

Question:
I had a question from a surgeon about a woman in her 11th week of pregnancy.She needs to undergo a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy using patent blue B sodium as the dye. Does anyone have any experience with this dye in pregnancy?

Answer:
The question is not well defined. Is it breast cancer or melanoma? We do not believe there is safety data specifically for blue B sodium. It would be reasonable to look at the ingredients of the dye and assess their specific risk. The surgeon may also want to consider whether the addition of the dye will have a significant impact on the pickup rate for this specific tumor.
