Question:
Is a CEA level elevated during pregnancy?
Answer:
CEA, or Carcinoembryonic Antigen, is glycoprotein that can be used as a non-specific marker for certain cancers. Most healthy persons have detectable levels of CEA, and levels can be elevated due to a variety of benign conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease and cirrhosis. There has been no data to suggest that the levels of this specific tumor marker are elevated in pregnancy, and hence, remain reliable tumor markers in monitoring malignancy in pregnant patients.
