Question:
I have heard about the use of steroids to combat nausea and promote appetite...any proven results?
Answer:
Even though steroids might promote appetite and help nausea, this group of medications is not recommended as a first line of treatment in the first trimester of pregnancy. Studies have shown that there is a risk for oral clefts. Please discuss the Motherisk treatment algorithm with your doctor. The algorithm is posted on this website in the Updates archives: February 2002
