Question:
I am now 9 weeks pregnant and had been taking Diclectin for a little over a week. I have one question regarding the duration of morning sickness vs Diclectin. Does taking diclectin lenghten the duration of morning sickness? I mean, if I don't take Diclectin, will the morning sickness stop at week 12, whereas if I take diclectin, it won't stop until week 20? Thanks
Answer:
The duration of NVP cannot be stated with certainty since everyone experiences it differently. Taking Diclectin will not have any impact on the duration of the symptoms. As a medication containing Vitamin B6 and antihistamine, it does not change the causes of the NVP (such as hormone levels, placenta growth, genetic factors, etc) -- it only controls the nausea and vomiting. Women are advised to take Diclectin daily, usually 2 at bedtime, 1 early morning, and 1 early afternoon, to control the NVP symptoms until the end of the first trimester. When they feel 100% symptom free for at least a week, women can stop the medication slowly, eliminating 1 dose at a time.
